Validating Efficacy and Safety is Critical

Critics argue most mental wellness apps lack research validating their clinical efficacy and safety. Without evidence they improve outcomes over other options, should these chatbots qualify as medical devices or therapeutic treatments? Unlike trained professionals, algorithms have no licensing boards holding them accountable.

Basing emotional intimacy solely around profit-driven code rather than human judgment also raises issues around privacy, transparency and exacerbating isolation. Forming bonds with AI could displace real relationships and enable users that require competent clinical care to avoid it.
