The vast procedurally generated universe of Starfield offers players unparalleled freedom to traverse the stars and explore over 1,000 planets. But to truly thrive as a space pirate, trader or mercenary in this expansive new IP, you need a reliable set of wheels – the staple Frontier starter ship simply won‘t cut it.
Fortunately, with some strategic upgrades and customization, transforming this humble vessel into an ultimate machine is easier than you think. As a seasoned Starfield mechanics with over 200 hours of playtime, I‘ve tinkered with my fair share of dropships to optimize them for any playstyle.
In this comprehensive guide, I‘ll walk you through the various upgrade options to supercharge your Frontier‘s cargo capacity, combat performance and on-board facilities. So grab your space suit and let‘s get upgrading!
Doubling Cargo Capacity for Maximum Profits
As an independent trader visiting far-flung outposts, having sufficient cargo space to transport rare commodities is essential for keeping my balance sheet positive.
While the Frontier‘s 400 unit default capacity seems decent early on, installing some additional storage modules can easily double or even triple this number. Here are some of my tried and tested tips for maximizing profits per run:
Deleting Default Habitat Modules
The very first thing I do after claiming my shiny new Frontier is jettison the bulky Hab module taking up precious real estate. This bedroom quarter features basic amenities like a bed, kitchen and bathroom – but we can live without such luxuries!
After all, the cockpit itself provides enough sleeping space and rations in a pinch. So I delete the Hab and instantly gain 80 units of free capacity – enough for some very lucrative early game trade runs.
Just note that completely removing life support systems will steadily drain your health. I once passed out and woke up to find my precious cargo jettisoned automatically! So make sure to leave the cockpit module intact for basic environment regulation before lifting off.
Installing Heavy Duty Landing Struts
While most pilots ignore landing gear customization, upgrading these simple struts can really boost your bottom line.
For example, replacing the standard, flimsy looking Peterbilt gear with rugged Hadrian models only costs 12,000 credits.
But in return they double the ship‘s mass allowance – which translates to heavier loads and bigger profits!
I once stuffed my hold with so much gold I couldn‘t lift off from the outpost until I manually dumped cargo! So don‘t neglect those landing struts.
Duplicating Existing Cargo Modules
The best part is the Frontier lets you duplicate existing cargo pods for added capacity. A single pod attachment only costs around 3k credits and high-grade Yuma containers offer upto 120 capacity.
I‘d recommend starting off with the cheaper Mesa units in multiples of four. Not only does this quadruple cargo space, but the square shape also improves weight displacement for stability.
Once you‘ve amassed over 100k credits from initial trade runs, upgrade to to the Yuma pods. With five attached, you‘ll be hauling a whopping 720 units! Combined with my other optimizations, I hit a personal record of over 830 cargo units in my last run.
Here‘s a quick capacity comparison across modules I‘ve used frequently:
Cargo Module | Cost | Weight | Capacity |
---|---|---|---|
Mesa Z-1 | 3.2k | Light | 30 |
Castor++ | 19k | Medium | 95 |
ECHO | 44k | Heavy | 140 |
Yuma X3 | 72k | Heavy | 120 |
With enough replicas and upgraded landing gear, breaching the 1000 unit halls is certainly achievable!
Further Expansions Through Engine Upgrades
Once my stash hit the 500k mark after deep core mining, I invested credits into new drives for even greater capacity.
Replacing the stock Spatha thrusters with Hermes XX core boosters almost doubled allowed mass. And they provide superior maneuverability to hightail from outlaw raiders too!
I did have to upgrade chassis reinforcements as well to handle the increased weight safely. But flying a blocky high-capacity vessel through a stunning nebula backdrop is extremely rewarding!
Enhanced Shields and Weapons for Dominating Space Battles
Combat pilots need beefed up defenses to claim those lucrative bounty hunting rewards. Fortunately the humble Frontier can transform into a formidable gunship with some specific upgrades:
Reinforced Shields
While the stock Artemis shields seem well-balanced, they simply cannot withstand sustained enemy fire during skirmishes. Even basic outlaw craft can penetrate your defenses with ease.
So I strongly recommend springing for the Marduk Heavy shields early on. Although pricey at 112k credits, they absorb nearly double the damage with triple recharge rate.
Combined with the Frontier‘s decent maneuverability post-engine upgrades, you can tank most attacks while landing devastating electron beam blasts (more on weapons later).
I‘ve included a shields comparison table below based on my own testing against NPC pirates:
Shield Generator | Cost | Absorption | Recharge Rate |
---|---|---|---|
Artemis MK2 | 16k | 2,300 | 1.8 kW |
Bastion | 44k | 4,120 | 3.1 kW |
Marduk Heavy | 112k | 4,200 | 5.4 kW |
While the Marduk offers only slightly better absorption than Bastion variants, its insane recharge rate really enhances sustainability in drawn-out fights.
Explosive Ordnances
Missiles might seem outdated in a future dominated by laser weaponry – but upgraded concussion warheads still pack a devastating punch!
Outfitting your frontal hardpoints with R9 Spearfish pods enables engagement well before the enemy enters cannon range. This is great for hampering mobility early.
I prefer launching plasma missiles in an initial volley to melt away shielding and auxiliary modules like sensors. Once defenses are down, switch to disruptor munitions to cripple drives and main turrets.
With key systems damaged by your missiles, opponents will struggle to return fire accurately – allowing you to mop them up with primary weapons. This highly effective loadout has helped claim countless bounties!
Electron Beam Emitters
Now what good is a missile boat without formidable primary armaments?
While the stock pulse laser gets the job done, I highly recommend upgrading to electron beam cannons once funds allow. This futuristic weapon tears through hull platings in seconds, while still damaging shields effectively.
And with triple the range of standard phasers, you dictate engagement distance while unleashing brilliant blue lances of pure energy towards the helpless prey.
Even well-armored heavy fighters stand little chance against this terrifying arsenal – just be sure to carry enough violet phoenix gems to satiate the thirsty beast!
With upgraded defenses and vicious weaponry like this, no pirate menace stands a chance against your enhanced Frontier cruiser!
Advanced Tactical Analysis
Once you‘ve installed these suggested upgrades, allocating additional energy to weapons and shields at the cost of engine power is a proven tactic.
Diverting power amplifies damage per blast while allowing shields to absorb more punishment. This does reduce mobility, but the Frontier‘s sturdy frame means you can shrug off more hits anyway.
I‘d also advise springing for the Mk2 grav drive upgrade whenever you‘ve got credits to spare. The added maneuverability helps evade incoming fire during lengthy battles.
And don‘t just stick to recommended weapons either. With four frontal hard points, customizing your loadout to target specific enemy ships keeps gameplay exciting.
I hope this detailed combat analysis gives you some ideas on transforming humble dropships into forces to be reckoned with!
Optimizing On-Board Facilities
Traveling through uncharted systems with unreliable comms naturally warrants some creature comforts and amenities. While spartan pilots may prefer barebones arrangements, installing a few onboard facilities makes deep space traversal much more bearable.
But more importantly, they confer tremendous gameplay advantages from healing to gear/ship upgrades without costly station visits. Let‘s take a look.
Medical Bays
Given the Frontier‘s average shielding, investing in some med bay Habs early on enhances survival greatly. For example, the basic Captain‘s Quarters slowly replenish health over time – extremely useful between bounty hunts.
I‘d highly recommend the Hygeia model at 10k credits. This hospital Hab fully restores health every sleep cycle while providing minor shield boosts as well.
Settled Systems models also let you skip time automatically during long supercruise journeys. No more mindlessly staring for hours on end!
For disease research missions, grab the Containment Hab with 40k credits instead. Its sterile chambers prevent bacterial infections when handling unknown alien samples.
And advanced bioscan probes enable developing vaccines mid-journey should symptoms emerge. Well worth the hefty pricetag.
Science & Engineering Labs
The Frontier hull might excel at absorbing enemy fire, but its auxiliary modules leave much to be desired. Upgrading these crucial systems requires specialized Labs.
For example, the compact Hadley Science Lab at just 18k unlocks vital Research Missions upon any planetary landing or space station docking.
By collecting commlink data and flora samples during regular exploration and completing these passive objectives, you can upgrade weapons and gear without excessive grinding!
Higher grade labs like the 82k Kepler Observatory also manufacture precious consumables like shield batteries and plasma cores from basic elements. No more paying crazy prices at faction vendors!
Similarly, installing the entry-level machine shop enables crafting armor attachments and cascade keys without airport visits. While limited, this functionality pairs perfectly with the Science Lab to bounty hunt in complete autonomy.
With this synergistic set up, long durations in uncharted space barely affect operational efficiency or battle readiness!
