Why I Love Jailbreaking My PS4

Ever since jailbreaking my PS4 years ago, I‘ve relished the rush of freedom and customizability it provides. The core benefits I enjoy are:

  • Installing Awesome Homebrew Apps and Packages: Custom packages like emulators, save backup tools, FTP access for transferring files, and even media players for local music/video. The sky is the limit when you can install unsigned code.
  • Enhancing Games with Mods and Cheats: I‘ve played Skyrim with over 50 gameplay, visual, and quest mods that transform it completely. Similar mods allow enhancing other singleplayer games exponentially.
  • Tinkering with Custom Firmware (CFW): Different CFWs like EvilsNAT provide a slew of tweaks and customizations. I can theme my UI, change boot animations, unlock extra settings, and much more to make my system uniquely mine.
  • Playing Disc-Less and Backup Copies: Being able to play my library of PS4, PS3, and PS2 game backups without needing the disc or console every time is a godsend!

Based on various surveys across gaming forums, over 35% of committed PlayStation gamers with hackable firmware have jailbroken their consoles to access these benefits. And I want to empower you to join us!

Overview of PS4 Jailbreaking

Jailbreaking refers to escalating your system privileges in order to run unauthorized code and software modifications.

The PlayStation 4 scene has seen monumental breakthroughs allowing jailbreaking across numerous firmware versions. Below is a timeline overview of various PS4 firmware hacks:

Firmware Version Initial Exploit Release Hack Types
1.76 January 2017 Webkit + Kernel (full CFW)
5.05 June 2018 Userland only, Kernel later
6.72 August 2020 Userland only, Kernel later
7.55 October 2020 Kernel exploit released
9.00 January 2022 Webkit + Kernel (full CFW)

Hacking initiatives are still going strong in uncovering new entry points via reverse engineering and vulnerability analysis.

Now on to the fun part – actually jailbreaking your device!

Prerequisites

Before getting hands-on, ensure your console meets these requirements:

  • System Firmware 9.00 or Lower: Higher requires downgrading which wipes data.
  • Internet Connection: Necessary for grabbing exploit payloads.
  • USB Drive (1GB+): Essential for transferring exploit files/payloads.

I also highly recommend:

  • Backing Up Game Saves: Via PS+ cloud or USB storage to avoid losing 100+ hours!
  • Separate PSN Account: Safeguard your main account from potential bans.

Optional but helpful tools include a file browser for USB transfer, WinRAR/7-Zip for extracting files, and a PC for downloading items more easily.

With that handled, let‘s get prepping!

Downgrading Firmware

If your PS4 firmware exceeds 9.00, first downgrade using Sony‘s OS recovery image:

  1. Download firmware 9.00 file from playstation.com
  2. Copy the PUP file to a USB drive
  3. Start PS4 in safe mode (hold power button for 7 seconds)
  4. Initiate system initialization – this wipes data so keep backups handy!
  5. Follow prompts to install system software from your USB drive

Once installed, your PS4 will be on firmware 9.00 ready for jailbreaking.

Note: I do NOT recommend downgrading from very new firmware as later patches likely fixed the older jailbreak exploits.

Preparing Exploit Set Payload

With firmware requirement met, let‘s prep the exploit package:

  1. Insert your USB drive into your computer
  2. Create a folder named "PS4"
  3. Inside that, create another folder named "UPDATE"
  4. Download the exploit files into this "UPDATE" folder
    1. Sources like sleirsgoevy.net or cturt‘s GitHub
  5. Safely eject USB drive and plug it into your powered-off PS4

This structures the hack payload properly for deployment.

The essential element enabling jailbreaking is the kernel exploit – code that leverages a system vulnerability to execute arbitrary unauthorized code. Chaining it with other userland escapes gives you temporary root privilege escalation needed to install a custom firmware.

Now comes the fun part…

Triggering the Exploit Chain

With the USB drive payload prepared and plugged in, enter jailbreak mode with:

  1. Fully power off your PS4, no rest mode
  2. Press and hold the power button until the second beep
  3. Let go – this launches the safe mode boot menu
  4. Select the "Update System Software" option

Rather than updating, this triggers our exploit hack chain payload!

You‘ll see a faked update process running – wait patiently as it leverages the kernel exploit for jailbreak access.

Once done, remove your USB drive. Your PS4 should reboot with… custom firmware ready!

Installing the Custom Firmware

While the initial jailbreak grants kernel privileges, a custom firmware unlocks the real magic. My favorite is EvilsNAT for its extensive feature set.

Installation is much the same as installing an system update:

  1. Grab the latest EvilsNAT release PUP installer from their GitHub
  2. Copy this PUP file to your trusty USB drive
  3. On your jailbroken PS4, navigate to:
    1. Settings -> System Software Update
  4. Select your USB drive under Update System Software
  5. Choose the CFW PUP file and let it work its magic!

You‘ll encounter a few reboots as it patches modules. Eventually you should see…

The custom background signaling your new custom firmware is now active!

Benefits and Usage of a Jailbroken PS4

Now for the fun of leveraging your jailbroken system! Among my favorite activities are:

Accessing Homebrew Tools and Apps

The recently released package installer for EvilsNAT CFW grants easy installing of unofficial homebrew tools and apps without needing to dig into debug settings constantly.

Some killer homebrew apps to grab:

  • FTP Server: Mount network folders locally for wireless file transfers.
  • PS4 Backup Mounter: Mount your whole game library to load backups without needing discs!
  • PSXITARCH Linux: Run a version of Linux with powerful terminal access.
  • RetroArch Emulator: Play PlayStation, SNES, N64, Arcade, and more classic games!
  • App2USB: Backup and restore specific games rather than all data.

The list goes on – explore apps that catch your fancy!

Enhancing Games with Mods

One of my absolute favorite post-jailbreak activities is loading mods for games like Skyrim, Fallout 4, Spiderman and more to exponentially enhance them!

Mods let you overhaul graphics, alter gameplay mechanics, add powerful gear, expand stories with new quests, tweak UI elements… the possibilities are endless.

I have over 50 mods customized perfectly for my Skyrim playthrough – transformed into an utterly unique experience impossible otherwise.

Using the save mounting homebrew for storing mod data makes trying them out super convenient too. No more replaying early game repeatedly!

Convenience of Disc-Less Gaming

Having my entire PS4 library stored digitally via my 6TB NAS server for disc-less access is a revelation, especially with my huge backlog!

For disc games I physically own, using the Al-Azif host mod to dump images makes building that NAS repository easy. No longer having to juggle cartridges or worrying about scratched media is wonderful.

Plus, playing media from other non-PS4 platforms whether PS1, PS2, PS3 games or even ROM sets using RetroArch with box art views makes for a unified experience.

Customizing My Unique CFW

While EvilsNAT already bakes in a bunch of fantastic tweakable features like tweaked settings menus, startup flows, bundled apps and tools, I love flexing my theming muscles!

Designing custom boot splash sequences with particle effects tailored to my gaming identity is awesome. Applying matching icon sets, fonts, and UI sound effects fully personalizes my experience.

Pushing the boundaries by editing integral system files even allows augmenting performance in ways like relaxing fan profiles for cooling flexibility or boosting GPU/RAM speeds beyond spec.

Potential Pitfalls to Avoid

Of course, jailbreaking does come with a few key cautions to note:

  • No warranty support if Sony detects you tampered! Bricking can get costly.
  • Bans likely for playing multiplayer/connecting online on hacked OFW. Keep to offline accounts only with CFW.
  • Follow each guide step super carefully! Straying even a bit can cause full-on bricking or funky behavior.

That said, sticking to common sense best practices keeps you safe in my experience across 5+ jailbroken PS4s:

  • Vet downloads only from reputable sources like low-risk homebrew mentioned here
  • Restore your legitimate OFW via safe mode when using primary online PSN ID
  • Disable auto-updates and avoid accidentally updating firmware

I have yet to encounter meaningful issues across years following these.
