How to Easily Share Spotify Playlists with Friends

Have you ever stumbled upon an epic playlist on Spotify and thought – my best friend NEEDS to hear this song list! Or wanted to create a customized mix of tunes to brighten someone‘s day? Well, you‘re in luck.

Spotify makes it incredibly easy to share playlists with anyone in just a few simple taps. Whether using desktop or mobile, I‘ll show you exactly how it‘s done.

I‘ve been an avid Spotify user for 5+ years now. So trust me, I‘ve shared my fair share of playlists! From sending songs to long-distance relatives to blasting beach jams at parties, I‘ve tried every trick.

In this handy guide, I‘ll provide some professional insights on the step-by-step process, pro tips I‘ve picked up along the way, and answers to frequently asked questions about playlist sharing. Time to get sharing those musical vibes!

Why Share Playlists Anyway?

Before we get started, let‘s chat about why you‘d even want to share playlists on Spotify:

Stay Connected – Sending personalized playlists is an awesome way to show long-distance friends/family you‘re thinking of them! It provides a meaningful, musical bonding experience.

Discover New Music – Exchanging playlists with others exposes you to new song suggestions you may have never found before. I‘ve discovered so many of my now-favorite artists this way.

Set The Vibe – If hosting an event or party, sharing a themed playlist is clutch for setting an ambiance all guests can enjoy. Collaborative playlists make this easy!

Express Yourself – We all have songs that represent fond memories or emotions. Sharing playlists offers others a window into understanding who you are.

Gain Exposure – Budding musicians can share playlists featuring their own tracks to help potential fans discover their artistic talents.

I don‘t know about you, but I‘m now pumped to get sharing! First step…

Step 1: Download App & Login

To access Spotify‘s library or any shared playlists, you‘ll need an account. The platform offers both free (ad-supported) and paid Premium options.

First, download the Spotify app on either desktop or mobile:

  • Desktop App – Works for Windows, MacOS, Linux machines
  • Mobile App – Download from Apple App Store or Google Play Store

Once downloaded, login using your current Spotify account credentials. If you don‘t have an account yet, you can easily sign-up via the app as well.

If you just want to access a link to someone else‘s shared playlist (without ability save/like songs), you can listen from any device without logging in. But read on for how to fully engage!

Step 2: Choose A Public Playlist

Your next task is picking which playlist you actually want to share. The options:

  • Your Own Playlist – Either one you personally created or a public playlist you now have permission to reshare
  • Other User‘s Playlist – Any public playlist from Spotify‘s social community
  • Spotify‘s Playlist – The platform and editors create public playlists anyone can access

However, there‘s one catch – you can only share public playlists, not private ones. Here‘s how to check if a playlist is public or private:

Check Privacy Status

Desktop: Click into playlist, privacy status displays underneath title. Will say either "Private Session" or "Public Playlist".

Mobile: Tap 3 dots next to playlist title, toggle switch to turn Private Session on/off.

You can only set playlists you created as private/public. For other users‘ playlists, cannot change privacy.

Step 3: Access Share Options

Okay, you‘ve chosen the perfect public playlist to share with someone. Time to grab the share link!

Desktop: Click 3 dots next to playlist name, hover over "Share", select "Copy Link to Playlist". This copies link for pasting anywhere.

Mobile: Tap 3 dots, select "Share" to open various share method options.

Both allow you to easily share link through messages, emails, social media posts, etc.

Desktop: Paste link into email, text, social post – anywhere you want to broadcast it!

Mobile: Select preferred sharing method from the menu:

  • Messages – Text, WhatsApp, Messenger
  • Social Media – Facebook, Instagram, Twitter
  • Email Apps – Gmail, Outlook, etc.

Recipients can listen instantly by tapping the link on any device, even without Spotify. Saving/liking does require an account though.

Step 5: Follow Shared Playlists

What if someone sends you an awesome playlist? Here‘s how to follow it within your Spotify profile for quick access later:

Desktop:

  1. Click +Follow button underneath playlist title
  2. Pick either Follow Privately or Publicly

Mobile:

  1. Tap +Follow button
  2. Select Follow Privately or Publicly

The playlist saves to Your Library. You can stream it anytime, download for offline listening, and get automatic updates of new songs added!
