I‘ve been geeking out on phones for over a decade – iPhones, Galaxies and everything in between. My buddy Sara just asked me for advice on whether she should upgrade to the new iPhone 14 or switch over to a Samsung S22. Such a great question!
As an Apple fanboy turned objective tech guru, I have some thoughts to help Sara (and you!) decide…
Backstory on the Big Two Phone Giants
Before diving in, let‘s recap where these mobile brands came from…
Apple unveiled their now-iconic first iPhone in 2007 which totally disrupted the cell phone scene with its sleek glass-and-metal styling and revolutionary touchscreen operating system iOS. iOS was perfectly tuned for the iPhone hardware and vice versa. Since then we‘ve seen a new iPhone model drop every year with better cameras and faster processors. To date, over 2.2 billion iPhones have been sold!
Samsung answered in 2009 with the first Galaxy Android smartphone. The key difference here is Samsung phones run on Google‘s Android OS, not a proprietary system like Apple‘s. Android is open-source which allows more flexibility but can impact performance. In just over a decade, Samsung has expanded the Galaxy lineup to cover every price point. And they dominated global phone sales last year – shipping a whopping 272 million units!
Design & Form Factor
Now to the good stuff! Let‘s compare these mobile titans…
Design
iPhones have a singular design language – flat glass sandwiching an aluminum frame, glossy logo centered on the back, prominent notches up front. Rinse and repeat each new model. Love it or hate it, Apple sticks to its design guns year after year.
Conversely, Samsung varies designs more between its Galaxy model lines. The high-end S and Note series have premium builds with curved "Edge" displays. Meanwhile the mid-range A series opts for cheaper plastic bodies to hit lower prices.
My tech friend Viv argues iPhone‘s consistency makes it feel exclusive and recognizable as a status symbol, while Samsung‘s variety means you can get some Galaxy models on the cheap. Fair points!
I‘ll call it a draw here design-wise. Grab an iPhone if you crave that iconic, distinctive Apple aesthetic. Get a Samsung if you want good looks alongside flexibility across models.
Size & Ergonomics
What about screen size and in-hand feel? iPhones historically skewed smaller than rival Android phones. Where Samsung pushed boundaries with bigger displays and more envelope-pushing form factors.
The original 2007 iPhone had a tiny 3.5-inch screen! Compare that to latest Galaxy S22 Ultra‘s spacious 6.8-inch curved display. Although the new iPhone 14 Pro Max finally features a big 6.7-inch panel playing catch up.
Bigger isn‘t always better ergonomically however. Sara complained her old Galaxy S10+ was too wide to use one-handed. Where her sister‘s iPhone Mini is truly pocketable. Another case-by-case call then – get the Galaxy S22 Ultra if you want maximum real estate for mobile movies and artwork. Grab the compact iPhone 13 Mini if ultimate portability is priority #1.

You can see each phone has strengths and weaknesses spec-wise. The iPhone 14 Pro Max boasts Apple‘s latest wicked fast A16 processor. Guaranteeing lag-free performance complete with iOS 16 software tricks like the Dynamic Island. Plus a super sharp 48 megapixel main camera.
But the S22 Ultra fights back with a gorgeous expansive 120hz variable refresh rate display that feels smoother. A crazy 108 megapixel cam allowing for massive cropping flexibility. And double the RAM of its Apple rival for flawless multitasking. Not to mention that microSD slot to expand storage for cheap.
My techie friends obsess over specs like these for bragging rights. But for most real world usage, both deliver fantastic response times and flawless features. iPhones tend to sustain high speeds for longer thanks to Apple‘s end-to-end integration. Where some Samsung users experience slowdowns over years of Android updates. Still you can‘t go wrong performance-wise here in 2023!
Camera Quality
Sara loves posting foodie pics and clever outfit selfies on her Instagram. And she‘s mentioned thinking about launching a YouTube channel soon too. So camera performance is vital in her next phone!
Good news is both iPhone and Galaxy shooters are outstanding in 2023. Apple‘s new Photonic Engine on the iPhone 14 Pro promises improved mid to low-light photography. While Samsung‘s leading Space Zoom hands Galaxy cameras legit bionic eye skills for wildlife and concert shots.
Recent camera tests do give the new iPhone 14 Pro the edge for brighter images with better white balance in dim restaurant settings. Making that perfect food pic pop!
But the Galaxy S22 Ultra pulls off natural bokeh portraits with good detail isolation and color rendition matching the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Plus far better optical zoom – 100x on the S22 Ultra allowing radical closeups compared to just 6x on the latest iPhones currently.
So if social shots are priority #1 like on Sara‘s Instagram, I‘d give the photographic crown still to iPhone. But for pros or enthusiasts wanting versatility plus telephoto power like YouTubing hobbyists, a Galaxy model like S22 Ultra can‘t be beat!
Cost Considerations
Dollars and cents time…what‘s the damage here?

As you can see, both premium models retail for around $1100+ when configured with decent storage and in standard colorways. So price-wise they actually compete closely at the highest tier.
However, expand the search and significant cost differences emerge based on brand…
Samsung offers over a dozen Galaxy models spanning from just $150 for 2019‘s Galaxy A01 all the way to nearly $2000 for the fully-loaded S22 Ultra 1TB configuration. Meaning you can find a Galaxy phone at nearly any budget. Even cheaper buying refurbished or waiting for sales too of course!
Meanwhile Apple‘s cheapest current offering is the 3-year old iPhone SE checking in at $429. With just a couple legacy models from 2020 rounding out the bargain bin below $500. Much less choice compared to Samsung‘s vast portfolio catering to lower price segments.
So the value choice is clearly Samsung if keeping costs minimal. But for simplicity‘s sake and intimacy with latest tech, Apple provides focus with just premium 2022/2023 models mostly.
Which Phone Brand is the Winner?
Let‘s wrap this up…should you grab that new iPhone 14 Pro Max or Samsung S22 Ultra?
For Sara specifically – I explained the iPhone 14 Pro‘s gorgeous updated photography skills seem best to feed her Instagram addiction. Combined with smooth iOS 16 software for basic usage. And brandy new features like Always-On display and Crash Detection for safety. At 6.7-inches, it‘s also smaller than recent Galaxy models while packing a big enough screen for YouTube prepping. Plus the Pro Max battery lasting nearly 30 hours exceeds the average iPhone and high-end Galaxy endurance now.
Ultimately the overall polish and social media prowess of the latest iPhone hardware and software updates seem to best align with how Sara uses her phone daily.
But that‘s just for one person‘s needs! You might value flexibility like microSD storage expansion in a Galaxy device. Or the 100x zoom for recording your kid‘s tennis matches across the park. Perhaps your workflow depends on Apple/Android exclusivity. Maybe the cost difference between brands influences your decision in the end.
