Based on Viking's methodology comes Valheim. An open-world game that allows the player to freely roam and explore the different terrain and biomes.
The texture of Valheim is somewhat similar to pixel art; those who take a closer look can see the pixels. But that only makes the game much more unique. Gather resources, craft items, melt ores, and build your base as you protect yourself from the dark creatures in the forests and fields.
Defeat all bosses to progress through the main story and obtain powerful items to help you become stronger.
1. Don’t Starve Together
Perhaps one of the most unique-looking survival games out there. Don’t Starve Together is a multiplayer game that puts you inside a strange world. Creatures around you are terrifying and monstrous; they will seek to attack you and your friends.
However, no matter how scary they look, the real threat in the game is starvation, just like the name of the game suggests. No matter what you do, make sure not to starve. Find a way to feed your characters, build a farm and harvest the crops as you explore the areas around you.
2. The Forest
One of the best survival horror games out there. The Forest is a game that takes place on an isolated island, the story starts with the main character being on a plane with his son, to suddenly face a plane crash. All passengers have gone missing or died, and the main goal is to find Timmy, your son.
As you explore the island, you will encounter caves and disturbing tribes that eat human flesh. You have to fight for your survival as you build, craft and increase your strength until you uncover the mystery of the island.
3. Conan Exiles
In a solo survival world, or with the accompaniment of friends in co-op mode, or perhaps with the threat of other players in multiplayer mode, Conan Exiles is a very tough game that challenges your survival knowledge. You will have to adapt to the weather and temperature of the game, as you can easily freeze to death or weaken due to cold.
Harvest food by hunting animals, craft weapons by collecting items, but most importantly, build a base to keep others from attacking. The game has beautiful character animations and various fighting styles that you will enjoy!
4. Outward
Start a brand new journey in Outward where you will have to survive against the cruel nature of the brutality of predators and other players. Create your character and customize it as there are many accessories available to make you stand out from the rest.
Choose your type of weapons and discover all the different spells that can be used to defend yourself or to hunt down others. Loot, craft and place a tent during your journey in the vast lands of Outward.
5. Grounded
What would you do if your body suddenly shrunk to the size of an ant? Grounded takes that idea and implements it into the game. Play alone or with your friends as tiny humans stuck in a house’s backyard. You have to figure out a way to return to normal, but you must be extra careful, you no longer have the human strength you used to protect yourself with! You’re prey to other creatures now.
Ants, spiders and more insects will come to hunt you on sight. Find resources to protect yourself with and craft weapons to survive.
6. Rust
Rust is a multiplayer game available to play on steam. It is one of the most difficult survival games out there, you start on a remote island as a naked person, the only thing you have in your inventory is a rock and a touch. Start by gathering resources on the ground before using your rock to chop down trees and collect wood.
Make a spear, some bandages and start looking for upgrades. Other players will be hostile, so you must make a base to defend yourself. Play like a lone wolf or gather a team of friends to become the strongest clan on the island.
7. Terraria
Terraria is a 2D pixel art sandbox game. The game allows you to build, craft and dig as much as you like. There is no limit to the things you can do in Terraria which is the reason this game was very successful.
However, you can’t roam around without facing obstacles. The game tests your survival skills by generating monsters at night for you to face. There are also bosses and secret weapons that you can obtain. Terraria is best with friends so make sure to invite them over!
8. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
Assassin’s Creed is a very famous and successful franchise that creates games based on real historical events. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla finally brings Vikings history into the game. Play as a strong and legendary Viking in the open world of Assassin’s Creed.
Raid with your tribe against the Englands and experience the brutal fighting style Vikings used to have. Develop new skills or improve them, interact with everything around you and see how you can influence the world by your decisions.
9. Niffelheim
Every Viking warrior seeks to die in battle, as they do not fear death. They long for Valhalla, a place where they can drink and feast after death.
However, this was not the case for you in Niflheim. You’re stuck in a hostile world after your death, and it is your goal to fight your way through and find the path that will lead you back to Valhalla. Play in 2D and engage in combat, find and craft weapons to ease your journey. Collect all required pieces to open the portal to eternal peace.
10. The Long Dark
Unlike other games on the list, The Long Dark is putting you through a very tough task, because you’re forced to go through it alone. A geomagnetic disaster has occurred, you’re facing the cruelty of mother nature and the cold it brings.
Play in a story-driven style that consists of four episodes, each episode bringing special events and hours of rich gameplay. Or play in survival free mode, count the days that you can live on your own without powers in the cold winter.
11. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
A masterpiece, one of the most realistic portrayals of mental illness in video games. HellBade: Senua’s Sacrifice is a beautiful game with graphics that will blow your mind. The atmosphere, the sounds, everything about this game is great.
The game drives you through a story that takes place in the Viking age. You will find yourself entrapped in an endless nightmare, fighting the punishment of gods for the sake of your dead lover’s soul. This game is much deeper than simple survival because you will see and feel what many others have gone through in our real world.
12. Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey
Take a journey back to a time before civilization existed and before humans were fully evolution to what we have known. During the Neogene period in Africa, play as an ape that is evolving to human and survives the dangerous wild that you seek to settle in.
There are many dangerous and huge predators around, or perhaps small venomous creatures that might strike you. Evolve through generations as you build your clan and find more people to join. Explore the forests and the rivers and expand your territories to obtain valuable resources.
13. DYSMANTLE
A top-down survival game in a world that is empty of humans. Only intimidating and vicious creatures remain. You will have to leave your shelter and explore this vile world for the sake of survival. Everything around you can be dismantled or broken down into pieces.
Collect these loots and craft or build them to help you in this difficult journey. Fish, farm or hunt to secure food and to keep yourself from starving. Fight against the evil creatures and enjoy the apocalypse.
14. The Infected
In an apocalyptic world, the virus has spread throughout humanity and has either killed or turned all of them into dangerous zombies. The infected is a survival game that is played from a first-person point of view. Live in the middle of wildlife, surrounded by lakes, forests and open fields.
Beware of lurking zombies as you collect resources and farm. Build a base, craft items, hunt and face the different weathers. Enjoy the day and night cycle and the various approaching seasons.
15. Era Of Newborns
A new era has arisen, after an epidemic has started and a virus was intentionally made by a group of scientists, they realized too late that they have started something out of their control. They couldn’t cure themselves, and they were meant to die in 20 years.
However, newborns were immune to those diseases that had spread. And so, in the year 2048, only newborns were left alive on this earth. Customize your character, craft, build, loot and survive in this new era. Fight or befriend other players and use the trading system to help each other.
