Overview of Tyr – The Norse God of War

To understand Tyr‘s role in God of War Ragnarok, you need context on his origins and significance as a Norse deity.

In Norse mythology, Tyr was considered the bravest and most honorable of the Aesir gods. He governed matters of law and justice, upholding oaths and settling disputes between men or gods.

Tyr was renowned for his sense of fairness, order and commitment to the law. He helped establish the Asgardian council system of justice and democracy. Unlike the deceitful god Odin, Tyr valued honesty and integrity.

However, Tyr is most famous for sacrificing his hand to the monstrous wolf Fenrir. The gods tricked and bound Fenrir with impossible bonds made by dwarves. Fenrir would only agree if one god placed their hand in his mouth as a sign of good faith.

Tyr willingly volunteered, knowing his hand would be bitten off. This myth reflects Tyr‘s courage and willingness to make personal sacrifices to uphold justice and protect others.

In God of War‘s lore, Tyr also traveled the realms and gained renown as a wise arbitrator between cultures. He was one of the few gods fluent in all the realms‘ languages, able to read and transcribe even the secret Jötunheim language.

Tyr tried advising Odin, but recognized Odin‘s obsession with avoiding Ragnarok had twisted him. As civil war loomed between the Aesir and Vanir gods, Tyr opposed Odin‘s warmongering brutality.

For this, Tyr was betrayed and imprisoned by Odin. The Aesir were told Tyr committed crimes against them, but in truth Odin likely feared Tyr exposing his acts to ignite the war.

Now only Tyr holds the truth of Odin‘s deception and secrets that could potentially stop Ragnarok. Your mission is to traverse the realms, battling Odin‘s forces to finally free Tyr from wrongful imprisonment.

Detailed Walkthroughs for Each Realm and Puzzle

Tracking down Tyr will take you across multiple realms, each with lethal enemies and complex puzzles barring the way. Here I‘ll provide detailed walkthroughs to safely navigate each realm:

Reach Niflheim‘s Aesir Prison Wreckage

The entrance to Tyr‘s prison lies in the poisonous realm of Niflheim. Specifically, head to the Aesir Prison Wreckage site in the northwest region.

Equip the following to safely traverse Niflheim and resist its poison mists:

  • Kvasir+ Enchantment: Restores protective barriers with each kill. Craft it with Asgardian Steel and an Aesir‘s Wrist Stone.

  • Ivaldi‘s Armor: Found in the center chest of Niflheim‘s maze. Grants resistance to Niflheim‘s curses.

Use your boat to reach the western beach leading to the prison. Along the way expect ambushes by up to 4 Nightmare Hulks and 8 Nightmare Scouts.

The hulks have high HP (4500) but are vulnerable to stun attacks. Use the Hel‘s Touch light runic attack then pummel them with heavy runic moves like Meteoric Slam.

Against groups, use wide area-of-effect runic attacks like Blast of Hephaestus to stun lock them. Atreus‘s electric arrows can also shock multiple foes at once.

With the right skills and runic attacks, you can clear the beach quickly. Then enter the prison wreckage to begin the first descent.

Descend the Hanging Prison Cells

Once inside the prison, look up to spot a Wind Fissure hook point. Throw your Draupnir Spear into it then leap off to swing down to the lower level.

Turn right to find a chain to pull and lower the hanging prison cell down to your level.

Jump across and pull the chain again to ride the cell further down. You‘ll need to lower it a total of 3 levels.

Time your movements to avoid the spinning pendulums as you cross between cell levels. Eventually you‘ll reach a cell connected to the far right side.

Before progressing, look inside cells along the way to find 2 Nornir Chests. Light their braziers to unlock upgrade materials.

Break the Cracked Wall to the Secret Passage

Drop down to the floor below when you reach the bottom cell. Turn around to spot a cracked wall section behind you.

Use your Blades of Chaos and hold R2 to unleash a sustained Immolation attack, breaking open the cracked wall.

Behind it lies a secret passage with a Nornir Chest. Light the three braziers to unlock it before continuing.

This shortcut lets you access the lower floors without having to swing down each time. It will be key for the final descent.

Open the Green Gate with Blades of Chaos

After breaking the wall, drop down to the path ahead. Follow it to reach a gate covered in thick green poison vines.

Use the Blades of Chaos to burn away the vines and open the gate. Interact once the vines have burned to pass through.

On the other side are 2 Ogre Nightmares. These giants deal massive damage but are vulnerable to Atreus‘s electric arrows.

Have Atreus keep them stunned with shock arrows. Then move in with a high damage runic attack like Hyperion Grapple to finish them off quickly.

Opening this gate unlocks the path forward to the next challenge.

Lower Both Hanging Prison Cells to the Bottom

Follow the path until you arrive at a large chamber with two hanging prison cells side by side.

Approach the cells and look left and right to spot the chains you need to pull to lower each cell individually.

Pull the chains all the way to lower both cells down to the very bottom level of the wrecked prison.

With both cells at the bottom, you now have a route prepared for the final descent to Tyr‘s secret cell.

Swing Down to Unlock Tyr‘s Cell

Return to the secret passage where you opened the cracked wall earlier with the Blades‘ fire attack.

Drop down the platforms until you reach the second lowered prison cell. Move around to its rear where you originally threw your Draupnir Spear.

Retract your spear then swing off the chain to land directly on the bottom floor. Turn around to finally spot Tyr‘s Cell!

Free Tyr and Uncover the Truth

Approach Tyr‘s cell door and interact to force it open, freeing him at last. This completes the quest to find the real Tyr!

A long cinematic will play out where Tyr reveals how Odin‘s obsession drove him mad and tyrannical. He imprisoned Tyr to hide his lies and warmongering brutality.

Tyr confirms he knows secrets that could stop Ragnarok, but needs the Unity Stone stolen by Thor to expose Odin‘s deception.

Your next mission is set: join forces with Tyr to retrieve the Unity Stone and put an end to Odin‘s anarchy. Tyr now becomes a powerful ally in changing the fate of all realms!

Optimal Route Through the Prison

Based on completing this lengthy quest multiple times, here is the optimal route and strategy I recommend:

  1. Reach the prison wreckage and clear the beach of enemies

  2. Descend via the hanging cells to the bottom right cell

  3. Use Blades of Chaos to break the cracked wall

  4. Grab the Nornir Chest behind the wall

  5. Ascend back up via the broken wall‘s secret passage

  6. Lower the two side-by-side hanging cells

  7. Descend via the right cell‘s spear chain to Tyr‘s Cell

This route skips having to swing down each individual cell level and backtrack constantly. Opening the secret wall provides quick access to the floors you need.

Make sure to lower both side cells before dropping to Tyr‘s level – this creates the shortest path back out after freeing him.
