Have you ever spent hours saving your favorite websites in Chrome, only to somehow lose them all when getting a new computer? As someone who bookmarks constantly, I‘ve been there too.
With over 2 billion Chrome users worldwide, there are likely quintillions of saved sites just waiting to disappear when switching devices.
But don‘t panic! Exporting your Chrome bookmarks makes it simple to backup all those painstakingly-curated pages. This prevents dead links and lost web gems when upgrading your laptop or phone.
As a seasoned Chrome power user, I‘ll show you how to easily export bookmarks on any Windows PC. Follow these steps:
Access Chrome‘s Bookmark Manager
First, open the Chrome browser on your current device. Click the 3-dot menu in the top right and select Settings.
In the left sidebar, choose Bookmarks to open Chrome‘s bookmark organizer. This houses all saved sites for easy access.
Chrome stores an average of 178 bookmarks per user – so your Bookmark Manager may have quite a few sites already!
Locate the Export Bookmarks Option
Inside Bookmark Manager, click the 3-dot menu again to access Manager Settings.
In the dropdown, choose Export Bookmarks. This exports a file containing all your bookmarks for backup.
Pro Tip: Enable the Bookmarks bar in Chrome for quick access to frequently-used sites. Just toggle this on in your Bookmark Manager settings.
Save the Backup File
A Windows Save As box will pop up. Name your bookmarks file and choose where to save it.
I like to save bookmark backups in my Google Drive for easy transferring. But you can also save to your Windows Documents folder.
Click Save and you‘ve just backed up your precious bookmark collection! 🎉
This file contains every site saved in Chrome, neatly organized into a simple HTML format ready for importing anywhere.
BONUS: Sync Bookmarks Across Devices
For on-the-go bookmark access, enable Chrome syncing to automatically store favorites in the cloud.
Here‘s how:
- Return to Chrome Settings menu
- Choose "Sync and Google services"
- Toggle "Sync" to ON
- Make sure "Bookmarks" slider is also enabled
This seamlessly syncs open browser tabs, bookmarks, history, passwords and more tied to your Google Account.
So any Chrome browser you log into will have the same Looking through your bookmarks? Tell me your tricks for organizing in the comments!
