Greetings adventurers! I‘ve journeyed the realms of Faerûn across a thousand campaigns and wish to prepare you for the trials of Baldur‘s Gate 3 by delving into the incredible racial diversity that makes this world so rich and exciting. From righteous aasimar to cunning tieflings, each people offer unique perspectives and playstyles for the ultimate roleplaying experience. Let‘s explore the histories, stats and abilities granting immense power in Larian‘s faithful adaptation of 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons rulesets – and more importantly, how they shape compelling character storytelling. Choose thoughtfully, my friends!
Races of Faerûn: An Evolving People
Unlike many fantasy worlds where race equals culture, Faerûnian societies consist of myriad ethnic groups united by geography, faiths, occupations rather than strict lineages. The upheavals across millennia – including the God Wars, Spellplague, and Dracorage – shuffled together descendants of elves, orcs, and other peoples into new regional identities. Politics and religion shape relations more than ancient grudges in the Forgotten Realms. Still, ancient legacies linger offering clues to unlocking each race‘s true potential.
Ageless Elves: Magic in their Blood
+2 Dexterity, Darkvision, Weapon & Language Skills
Elves blessed with preternatural reflexes and senses exceeding mere humans. Excellence with bow and blade comes naturally to even the humblest elf, though most instead answer arcane callings.
High Elves like diviner wizards peering through the veil of fate. Wood Elves embrace the wanderer packing deadly aim. My Arrow of Winter pierced many fabled monsters during countless hunts beneath the ancient boughs of Cormanthor and I recommend elf rangers to all novice monster slayers. Elf weapon skills also enable lethal rogues, dawn templars and night blade legendaries like Artek D‘Arconnar.
Yet one must also know the curse of elven memory – loss of mortal friends who fade as leaves in winter. Take solace in fine song and wine!
Stout Dwarves: Forged in Stone
+2 Constitution, Combat Training, Resistances
Delve deep beneath the mountains where dwarves awaken stone giants and forge foundational alliances between kingdoms through trade. Bold dwarven clerics and valor bards rally comrades while rune carved axes and hammers shatter foes.
Hill Dwarves embody perseverance and healing, perfect for Weathercote‘s divine champions. As a Dungeon Delver, I relied on Mountain Dwarf endurance against deadly traps and monsters erupting from the depths.
Dwarves favor law and loyalty, offering sturdy pillars amidst chaos. But they also teach fierce grudges spelling woe for oath breakers and foreign foils like scorned wizard Irfelujhar or the severed Derro. Their undying passions expose strengths and flaws alike.
Kindhearted Halflings: Small Heroes
Lucky, Brave, Nimble
Laugh not at diminutive sizes for Halflings hide indomitable spirit behind cheerful faces. Pluck strings to rally friends and befuddle enemies as lore masters like the legendary bardband Talespinners.
As a Lightfoot, I charmed Lord Piergeiron himself into sponsoring a Halfling village. But Stout resilience will aid Deadly Tricksters and Archie Colten‘s duelists lasting moments longer against blows while luck turns the tide.
Seekers of simple comforts, Halflings still hunger for mighty deeds. Thus mighty deeds seem to find them.
Humans: Ambition Incarnate
+1 All Stats, Extra Feat
Here stand the daring, creative, chaotic peoples who dominate Faerûn through sheer audacity and numbers. They master all talents, unable to resist tempting complexities – for good or ill as mad wizards like the Nameless One and heroines like Mirt the Moneylender prove.
I bunked in Ten Towns with Illuskan clansfolk, sailed with exotic Calishite merchant lords and studied at the feet of Tethyrian battle mages. Humans contain multitudes indeed!
For meteroric rises and spectacular falls, bet on humanity‘s boundless potential. The Scattering changed everything, yet humans thrive adapting to new lands as always.
Infernal Tieflings: Fiendish Outcasts
+2 Charisma, +1 Intelligence, Elemental Resistance, Darkvision
When demons slipped their bonds ages past, they fouled bloodlines across Faerûn – spawning the tragic Tiefling lineage accursed and rejected by all. Yet this adversity bred cunning warlocks like Zariel Stoneblood and Briza Do‘Urden who unlocked the secrets of Hellfire and mastered ultraterrestrial arcana.
I advise Asmodeus descendants call forth hellfire against devil swarms from the Hells‘ bleeding borders. Levistus cooled my fury during rains of azure fire magic I endured trespassing across the Sea of Fallen Stars. And what better than Glasya‘s wings to reach evil flyers?
Though branded by supernatural marks, Tieflings take destiny into their own hands.
Exotic Dragonborn: Power Incarnate
Breath Attack, Damage Resistance
When draconic sorcery infused mortal champions creating half-dragon scions, the Dragonborn awakened as an ascendant people infused with ancient supremacy.
Gold scales blind foes then acid melts them. I suggest Gold colors for inspiring bards and strategic battlemages wielding theWeave while Bronze boosts electric evokers.
See poison choices too if you dare follow the corrupting path of Cryonax the Shadow Dragon or Ebondeath. Such legacy endures despite the Dragonfall shattering aged wyrms‘ dominion over small folk.
Deeper Cuts: Uncommon Potential
Faerûn overflows with more uncommon peoples offering truly exotic options for singular legends unmatched by common races.
Freakish Firbolg: Giant-touched Sages
+2 Wisdom, +1 Strength
Powerful Build, Speech of Beast & Leaf, Invisibility
When giant clans bred with fey for unknown purposes, the towering Firbolgs emerged possessing druidic and clan hunter talents blessed by Ordning mysticism. Though slow moving, they turn invisible and befriend all animals.
My mentor Grollok guided our mountain passage. And firbolg truthseers reputedly glimpse futures as The Great Glacier‘s cracks quicken.
Serve the ordning by wielding two-handed totem weapons and reality-bending sanctorium enchantments.
Haunted Shadar-kai: Ethereal Wanderers
+2 Dexterity, +1 Constitution
Necrotic Resistance, Blessing of the Raven Queen
Sinister otherworldly patricians on shadowy errands for their divine queen, pallid Shadar-kai unexpectedly materialize bearing soul-reaping scythes and necrotic arrows before departing whence they came.
As the Spellplague‘s mists dissipate, these once-elves return for inscrutable purposes. But The Raven Queen‘s blessing allows uncanny teleportation as the legendary assassin Black Cross.
Master negative energy attacks and teleportation circles to haunt your enemies.
Psionic Aasimars: Scions of the Divine
+2 Charisma & +1 Other Stats
Light Bearer: Light Cantrips, Lesser Restoration Spell
Healing Hands: Bonus Action Healing
When the divine lay with mortals, celestial blood gifted aasimars with angelic virtues. Though exceedingly rare, these planetouched quest tirelessly against evil.
As a Protector I wielded my goddess‘ radiant sword with greats weapon mastery:A paladinfriend cleanses curses granting advantage on saves. Scourge fire blasts through hordes while Fallen withstand the wicked.
Let aasimar hope and healing inspire companions on the path of righteousness.
