The Complete Guide to Adding Custom Tokens to Trust Wallet

As a cryptocurrency marketing consultant for over 5 years, I‘ve helped countless clients set up their Trust Wallets to hold and track various coins. One common question I get is: "I bought this new token but don‘t see the balance in my wallet, please help!"

This comprehensive guide will explain step-by-step how to manually add any custom token to Trust Wallet, with plenty of details, tips, and examples from my experience.

Why New Tokens Don‘t Show Up Automatically

Trust Wallet conveniently supports popular tokens like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and BNB natively. However, for lesser known altcoins or brand new tokens, especially those purchased through DApps within Trust Wallet‘s browser, you will need to manually enable them to accurately view your balance.

  • Over 5000 new tokens were created in 2022 on Ethereum and BNB Chain. Default wallets cannot keep up with onboarding so rapidly.
  • These new coins have their own unique contract addresses on their respective blockchains. Without explicitly adding, Trust Wallet won‘t recognize.

For context, other wallets like Metamask take a decentralized approach by showing all tokens by default. This allows you to see new token balances instantly but can clutter your wallet. Trust Wallet opts for curation over showing everything. So despite the extra steps, manually adding tokens gives you control to customize.

Step 1 – Identify Token Contract Address

Open a browser on your phone or PC, and google search for "[token name] contract address". Go to either:

  • CoinMarketCap – Leading price tracker site listing 1000s of cryptoassets
  • Etherscan – Explorer for Ethereum tokens
  • BscScan – Explorer for BNB Chain tokens

On the token‘s page, find and copy the contract address. This is a long string of numbers and letters.

  • For CoinMarketCap, it‘s listed under "Contract" details.
  • For Etherscan/BscScan, it‘s shown prominently at the top.

Important: Verify you have the legitimate contract address from an official source. Fake addresses can lead to losing your funds!

Step 2 – Access Manage Tokens in Trust Wallet

Open the Trust Wallet mobile app and tap on the filter icon at the top right. This will bring up the manage tokens screen.

iOS:

Android:

From here you can toggle supported tokens on/off to display in your wallet.

Step 3 – Paste Contract Address

Now paste the contract address you copied earlier into the search field:

And press search on your keyboard. If successful, it will auto-fill the token‘s details.

If token does not show up, tap "Add Custom Token" below and manually enter the following details:

  • Network: Such as Ethereum, Smart Chain, Polygon etc.
  • Token Symbol: The abbreviated letters for the token.
  • Decimals: The decimal precision supported. Typically 18.

Step 4 – Re-Check Balance

Toggle the slider ON to enable the token to display in your wallet. Go back to main portfolio tab and scroll down to check your token balance.

  • Give it some minutes to reflect updated balance after adding
  • You may need to tap the refresh circle icon

Voila, you should now see the new token and its balance!

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Incorrect network? Tokens run on different networks – make sure it matches where you bought it
  • Price not updating? Trust Wallet uses CoinMarketCap pricing data – new tokens may take time to show live value
  • No balance showing? Try clearing cache and restarting the app after adding token

Conclusion

While it takes a few more steps compared to other crypto wallets, I prefer Trust Wallet‘s clean and curated approach to only show supported tokens by default. The customizable functionality gives flexibility as well.

Now that you know how to manually import token contract addresses, you can conveniently track all your new coin purchases! As more clients ask me about newly released tokens, this guide will help explain the simple process to add them and see balances accurately.
